A Reuters report states that firms in India are now turning to ancient philosophies of `vaastu shastra’ and Chinese `feng shui’ “in a bid to boost their businesses through “balanced” Web pages”. Believers in vaastu shastra say the Indian science, which seeks to create harmony between nature’s five elements — earth, fire, water, air and space — man and objects, can be directly applied to the Web, just as it is to home design.“Just as the world comprises of the five basic elements, each Web site has five elements and these need to be in balance with one another,” says Dr. Smita Narang, author of Web Vaastu, a new book that marries vaastu laws with the Internet. The book has proved popular with businesses.”Earth is the layout, fire is the color, air is the HTML, space is name of the Web site, and water is the font and graphics,” says Narang, adding that each must be chosen carefully and strike a balance with the other.

    This is really sad.
The web already has too many people obsessed with animations and graphics while completely missing the real requirements of the web - simple, easy-to-use and fast!

Applying “wastu” to the concepts web design borders on voodoo. Instead people should pay more attention to their content(which still is “king”) and on how to make their websites more accessible to people with disablities.

Another marketing gimmik to run a website. Web surfers are more interseted in seeking fast info rather than the placement, position and the ethics of the website. For designer it might be limitations if their boss is superstitious. Web Vastu seems to be possible only in India as people here are more prone to such things than believing in yourself. How will a person decide the North South East West directions of the screen as per the Vastu shastra.

Im waiting to work on Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash (vastu versions)

No doubt content is ‘king’ but nobody wants to see an ‘Emperor who has no clothes’. It is important that the content be well presented. I agree with Nikhil Gupte that the real requirements of the web are simplicity, ease of use and speed. Vastu could indeed be a way to address the first two. And with bandwidth increasing by the day, speed becomes a smaller issue.
