The best thing that could have happened to Microsoft is the fact that Ray Ozzie is now the chief software architect (CSA). While he’s well-known for Lotus Notes, one also need to remember that he was the founder of ‘Groove’ (www.groove.net) — bought over by Microsoft (therefore, it’s now called Microsoft Office Groove 2007) after which Ray Ozzie joined the company and is now the CSA.
Groove is desktop software designed to facilitate collaboration among small groups. Best of all, it can be downloaded FREE OF COST (very unlike Microsoft).
Ray Ozzie is expected to give Microsoft a new vision and help it be more ‘open’ and not ‘proprietary’. One can already see the beginning of such moves with Groove. Hope it’s here to stay.

I think more than any internal force, external competition from the likes of Google and Yahoo will force M$ to be more “Open” and “Free”.
Unfortunately, Mr. Ballmer doesn’t know the meaning of the term - “Not Proprietary”, so their “Free” would have a catch…
I guess they could offer “Free” online services and look at making money by subscribing to AdSense (not likely though)

Ray Ozzie is the best thing that could have happened to MS, which was kind of “toothless tiger” when it comes to products integrated with web or products for the web. He will bring the much needed “web” focus (eg. live clip board)to there desktop products.

Amen, hope it works that way, though I think you are very optimistic.
