What better note to start a blog than boasting that I test drove the world’s best motorcar? The Rolls-Royce Phantom came for a road test and we had to er…road test the car, right? So no pussyfooting with the near four crore behemoth then.
We drove it as hard and fast as we could, subjected it to some really terrible suburban and metro traffic and well, even subjected it to a performance evaluation track test (PET test to BSMotoring crowd). Was it fun? You bet. The three-tonne automobile shrinks around you as you drive and you can treat her the same way you treat a Maruti 800.
Alright, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The narrow-on-the hold steering is absolutely effortless but 72 kgm of stump-pulling torque going to the rear wheels proved tricky to handle. Now we wanted our record with RR to be perfect so we took it a bit easy (the imported test car cost close to Rs 4 lakh a month on insurance) with the PET test - still it beat the time posted by the Ford Fiesta 1.6.
Don’t ask me which Henry is rolling in his grave. Do I recommend it? If you were considering the Maybach - sure, the Phantom is more VFM. Rolls-Royce? VFM? Isn’t it great that you can say what you want in a blog and get away with it? See you soon.
